ORRYELLE DEFENESTRATE

Telluric Atavisms

An expression in live music, movement and body-morphing of the human connection with (and as) other life-forms. First music will be established -a juxtaposition of human ‘civilised’ sounds such as neoclassical violin, with more primal harmonic chanting and throat singing. Loops will be created from the live sounds, so these can continue as a background soundscape while the artist moves into a more physical space of transformation. Clay, the primal elements of earth and water, will be employed to shape and reshape the face and body of the artist. Various animal atavisms will be explored and expressed, and the

movement of these continuing re-creations will echo their forms, as the artist dances an evolving mask. Voice will also continue to be overlaid on the music -singing but also various animal sounds, bestial and celestial expressions of the various forms taken. Various appendages -bones, horns, tusks, fur, wood -are added using the built up layers of clay as a base for them to be firmly attached. Part of the beauty and strangeness of this kind of ritualistic play is that the artist does not fully know what forms will emerge (not using a mirror and sight, sound and even breath being sometimes impaired temporarily during the process). Rather one must continue to move with the clay, reshaping it continuously into new forms as earlier ones begin to fall apart. Thus a continuum of metamorphic ‘scrying’ in earth and water allows spirit to have its way with the invoking artist-magician in the moment. Expressions may thus transform through the known

(invoked with talismanic parts of the animals employed) and beyond into mythic, hybrid and even alien expressions of the Other fused with the Self in an Ecology of interspecies and even inter-dimensional magical ecology.
