DOMINIQUE SAVITRI BONARJEE

Dressed in Water, still from film

Dressed in Water (2025) is a dance for the water element, seeking guidance for how rebirth follows collapse. The reclining Buddha is reincarnated in a feminine form and must navigate existence, grasping the fluid nonduality (spirit and matter, masculine and feminine) of flesh, learning of formlessness from water, through the body as a “device of life itself that dares to live death…” (Masaki Iwana). At the heart is a piece of copper sheet metal that is smelted into a human-like form. Copper is conductive and purifying, it is associated with the transport of energy and with the heart chakra.

This piece is part of Dominique-Savitri’s new series of works entitled, Swuš, an ongoing ode to water as a spiritual source of knowing. It follows the Collapse series where chi creates rituals for embodying time by surrendering to gravity, as a rebellion to the linear logic of dominant societal infrastructures.

Biography
Dominique Savitri Bonarjee, (chi/mer/eole) is an Indian-French artist making art about time, water and the transduction of energy. With a transdisciplinary art practice focused on aliveness, she stages work in diverse environments, mostly  outdoors, often in derelict and public space. Highlights include COLLAPSE, a large-scale dance activation in the City of London, exhibiting at the Nakanojo Biennale (Japan), Kunstfest Weimar, and a collaboration with eco-feminist author Astrida Neimanis for Lofoten International Arts Festival. Her Art PhD, (Goldsmiths University of London, 2024) is entitled ‘Space of the Nameless’ and follows her somatic method of detaching the ‘I’ as a way to commune with the unknown in artmaking. She wrote her first monograph, “Butoh, as Heard by a Dancer” (Routledge, 2024), convinced of postwar Butoh dance's immanent relevance for engaging with today’s ecological and societal crises from an embodied place.
